Transcribing documents

I so wish I had more free time to work on this project.  I get such a kick out of it.  In addition to working on the Berech family, I am working on my Mothers side too., which take considerably more time.   I have to say....... as far as Berech's go, at least we have a reasonable amount of children each generation to follow.  On my Mothers side it seem that 10 children is the minimum.........  Makes my head swim....!

I'm starting to finally get around to transcribing all the census's and other documents I have gathered for the past couple of years.

Please keep in mind that when I transcribe a document, I leave all misspellings and all apparent and not so apparent mistakes in tack.   I make notes later on about it.

Let's start with the 1940 Census for John Berech Sr.:

First I will attach a blank 1940 census form in case you want to see what each field is for.

1940 Census-09 April
Taken in Port Chester Village, Town of Rye Westchester County, New York.
Address: Harris Blvd (No House number) Home value is $8,700 (not a farm)

  • John Berech - (Head of Household) Married 42 year old White Male. 8 years of schooling with no higher education. He was born is Russia and is a naturalized citizen. In 1935 He and his family lived in Greenwich, county of  Fairfield, Connecticut. (Not on a farm) He is listed as working in March of 1940, He is currently working as the proprietor of a restaurant (Counter Man) approximately 84 hour per week.  He worked 52 weeks in 1939. $0 in salary or wages. Class of worker is OA (work on own account) He received $0 in wages.  He received more than $50 from sources other than wages or salary.
  • Olga Berech -  Listed as the person proving the census information. A Married white female age 31. She has 1 year of High School with no further education..  She was born in Connecticut. In 1935 lived in Greenwich, county of Fairfield, Connecticut (not a farm). She is not gainfully employed and listed as "keeping house" with no income from other sources.
  • John Berech - Son, Single White Male Age 11. Is attending school and has completed 5 years of education. Born in New York. In 1935 lived in Greenwich, county of Fairfield, Connecticut (not a farm). Not Gainfully employed with no income from other sources.
  • Alexander  - Son, Single White Male Age 8. Is attending school and has completed 5 years of education. Born in New York. In 1935 lived in Greenwich, county of Fairfield, Connecticut (not a farm). Not Gainfully employed with no income from other sources.
  • William  - Son, Single White Male Age 8. Is attending school and has completed 2 years of education. Born in New York. In 1935 lived in Greenwich, county of Fairfield, Connecticut (not a farm). Not Gainfully employed with no income from other sources.

The obvious error on this report would be Alexander having 5 years of education and William only having 2.  It appears that John doesn't pay himself a wage and probably takes what it needed from profits, thus the $50 or more from other sources. The number of hours worked is based on the week March 24-30, 1940.  Sooooo 84 hours that week.  Dang.  He worked all 52 weeks in 1939.  I remember Dad saying, his Dad worked all the time.

If anyone would like me to email full size documents to them please let me know.
